Agriculture

The Suffolk Economic Development Department now has an Agricultural Specialist to assist landowners in starting or growing their agricultural enterprises. Agriculture is an important part of the economy of the Commonwealth, and Suffolk, in particular has a strong agricultural sector contributing over $60,000,000 dollars to the economy in direct sales and ag-related businesses.

Recognizing the importance of agriculture in Suffolk’s economy, we are here to identify and implement strategies to protect and grow the City’s agriculture and agriculture-related businesses, support the development of value-added agriculture businesses, explore agro-tourism opportunities and strategically protect the highest quality agricultural land.

With that in mind, we hope to attract more visitors to farms for recreational, educational, or retail purposes to increase profit margins for local farmers. We support and assist with the development of alternative agricultural economic practices such as community supported agriculture (CSA) and promote activities such as farm tours, pick-your-own produce, farm-to-table and other experiences to capitalize on existing agricultural assets.

Preserving farmland and the rural character of Suffolk is vital to our continued economic vitality.  The cornerstone of this is education. Our office seeks to work with schools, civic groups and other organizations to provide a better understanding of the importance of agriculture to our global economy as well as our everyday lives.
