Third-Party Logistics Provider to Establish New Operation in Virginia

RICHMOND— Governor Glenn Youngkin today announced that FreezPak Logistics, LLC, a leading provider of full-service cold and dry storage services, is investing $77.5 million to construct a 245,000-square-foot cold storage facility in the City of Suffolk to serve the Mid-Atlantic region via The Port of Virginia. Virginia competed with Georgia and North Carolina for this project, which will create 80 new jobs.

Global Specialty Chemicals Producer Solenis to Expand in Virginia

RICHMOND, VA – Governor Glenn Youngkin today announced that Solenis, a leading global producer of specialty chemicals for water-intensive industries, will invest $193 million to expand its operation in the City of Suffolk. The company will build a new 80,000-square-foot production facility, packaging facility, and tank farm, and add a new rail spur to accommodate production of polyvinylamine (PVAm) polymer products, which are used in paper and cardboard manufacturing. This new facility will be used to grow the existing polymer product line and add additional capacity of this critical monomer to the existing supplier. Virginia successfully competed with Georgia and Texas for the project, which will create 34 new jobs.

Dec. 13, 2023 – Publix Super Markets, Inc. is pleased to announce the opening of the Publix Super Market at Planters Station, at 7 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 13. The 46,791 square-foot Publix will employ approximately 130 associates.”

International Corrosion Coating Company to Locate U.S. Operation in Virginia

Governor Glenn Youngkin today announced that Automatic Coating Ltd., a technologically advanced custom powder, liquid, and corrosion coating industry leader headquartered in Toronto, Canada, will invest $22.8 million to locate its U.S. operation in the City of Suffolk to support an existing contract with the U.S. Navy and expand with new industrial and commercial customers in the U.S. The company contracts with the U.S. Navy to use its patented process for corrosion coating on a wide variety of components including water tight doors, louvers, hatches, and scuttles. Virginia successfully competed with Florida for the project, which will create 50 new jobs.

Historic Suffolk Towers Undergoing Restoration and Revival

Tymoff+Moss Architects (TMA), Commonwealth Preservation Group (CPG), and Elliott Apartments LLC are teaming on a project financed by TowneBank to renovate the 1925 Suffolk Towers building. The “skyscraper” at 181 N. Main Street began life as The Elliott Hotel during the heyday of Suffolk’s peanut industry. Original spaces included the lobby with decorative plasterwork and terrazzo floors, ballrooms and banquet spaces, dining room, 57 rooms for lodging and quarters for housekeepers, and commercial spaces on the ground floor. The hotel was converted to apartments in the 1980s, the building slowly deteriorated over time; in 2021, two different fires resulted in the building’s vacancy.

This fast-tracked project’s construction begins this summer, with 45 units to be available to rent in 2024. The existing Baron’s Pub and Restaurant on the ground floor will remain open throughout and beyond the renovation.

SHRA Announces White Marsh Pointe at Eagle Landing

With its October 23, 2020, mortgage closing and loan endorsement by HUD, the Suffolk Redevelopment and Housing Authority (SRHA), took a major step toward providing a better living environment for lower income families. White Marsh Pointe at Eagle Landing located at the end of Davis Boulevard off of White Marsh Road provides 206 apartments that will include 113 rehabbed units (formerly Cypress Manor) and 93 newly constructed units (formerly Parker Riddick). In January of 2021, the demolition of Parker Riddick began as did the rehabilitation of the 113 units of formerly Cypress Manor (now known as Eagle Landing). As of this date, all but one building has been fully rehabilitated and reoccupied and the first of the newly constructed units will be occupied in January of 2023.

Tiffany Hassell-Gregory opened her first Nothing Bundt Cakes in Chesapeake’s Greenbrier area in 2018 and is thrilled to double the joy she can share with a second location in her hometown of Suffolk. “We are such a celebratory brand, and this is the perfect time to be able to honor and celebrate those who have pulled together through such a difficult past year and half to strengthen our beautiful community,” explained Hassell-Gregory. “From medical workers and first responders to teachers and special needs champions, the resilience our community has shown is amazing.” Although the bakery opened December 10, Hassell-Gregory and her team look forward to celebrating with a grand opening February 4-5 and all are invited to join.

Governor Northam Announces Lumber Exporting Company to Establish Operations in Suffolk

Governor Ralph Northam today announced that Kristi Corporation, a global supplier of industrial raw material for aluminum and steel metallurgical industries, will invest $1.1 million to establish a log load and fumigation facility at 1326 Portsmouth Boulevard in the City of Suffolk. The company plans to source 100 percent of its exports from Virginia loggers. Virginia successfully competed with North Carolina and Pennsylvania for the project, which will create 10 new jobs.
